Martin Scorsese writes open letter to teenage daughter

(Photo by Jim Spellman/WireImage) Veteran director Martin Scorsese has written an openletter to his teenage daughter to guide her in her future movie career. The 71-year-old filmmaker is father to 14-year-old Francesca, with his fifth wife, Helen Morris, and the teenager has already shown a passion for her dad’s job by making appearances in a number of his pictures, including “The Departed” and “The Aviator.” Scorsese has now passed on his wisdom about the movie business to Francesca in an openletter, which was published by Italian news magazine L’Espresso. In the note, the director explains to his daughter that she has a bright future in Hollywood, insisting the movie business is changing for the better. He writes, “Dearest Francesca, I’m writing this letter to you about the future. … I’ve realized that the idea of cinema that I grew up with, that’s there in the movies I’ve been showing you since you were a child … is coming to a close. … I don’t mean to be despairing. I’m not writing these words in a spirit of defeat. On the contrary, I think the future is bright… So why is the future so bright? Because for the very first time in the history of the art form, movies really can be made for very little money.
